Colorado MCLE Compliance

At 45 units each compliance period, Colorado attorneys have one of the more formidable MCLE requirements. Luckily for attorneys in Colorado, each compliance period lasts for three years. Even better, Colorado does not cap online CLE units – attorneys may take all 45 credit hours through online CLE courses.

In Colorado, online CLE courses are considered to be Homestudy Credits.  To receive CLE credit for a homestudy course held outside of Colorado, you must submit a copy of your Colorado Affidavit form to the Colorado MCLE Board. Since Attorney Credit’s courses are held outside of Colorado you will need to submit a copy of your Colorado Affidavit form to the Colorado MCLE Board to receive credit for your CLE courses that you complete on our CLE website.[1]

Colorado CLE Compliance and Reporting Requirements

  • Reporting Cycle: 3 years
  • Compliance Deadline: December 31
  • Reporting Deadline: January 31

If you have fully complied with your Colorado CO CLE requirement, you should have already received a confirmation e-mail from the Colorado CLE Board. If you have not complied with the CO MCLE requirement, the Colorado CLE Board sent you an email in May containing information and guidelines explaining how to remedy your CLE deficiency. A final notice should have been sent this month (November) if you still have not completed your MCLE requirement.

If you fail to complete and report your required CO MCLE units in a timely manner, your final Affidavit may be accompanied by a specific plan for curing the deficiency within 17 weeks after the date of the final affidavit. When you file your plan, you must include the make-up plan filing fee.[2]

If you wish to continue to practice law in Colorado, please make sure to complete your MCLE requirement by December 31 … it will save you a lot of headache.  In Colorado, noncompliance can result in late penalty fees and a suspension from practice.

Such plan will be deemed accepted by the CLE Board, unless within 14 days after the Board’s receipt of the final affidavit the CLE Board notifies the affiant to the contrary. Full completion of the affiant’s plan will be reported by affidavit to the CLE Board not later than 14 days following the 119-day period.
