Minnesota CLE: 15 On-Demand CLE Credit Hours Starting 7/1

screen-capture

Attorneys licensed to practice in Minnesota have one of the larger CLE requirements in the country.  Minnesota attorneys must complete and report 45 credit hours of accredited CLE courses every three years.[1]  However, completing Minnesota CLE courses will soon get a little easier and more convenient for Minnesota attorneys.  Starting in July attorneys in Minnesota will be able to complete on demand audio and video courses and count the hours towards their Minnesota CLE requirement.

Minnesota CLE Compliance & Reporting Requirements

  • Reporting Cycle: 3 years
  • Compliance Deadline: June 30
  • Reporting Deadline: August 31
  • Total Number of Units Required: 45
  • On Demand CLE Units Allowed Starting 7/1: 15

On December 6, 2013, the Minnesota Supreme Court issued an order that will allow Minnesota attorneys to claim up to 15 credit hours for on demand CLE courses per reporting period.[2]  This change allowing 15 credit hours of on demand CLE courses will become effective July 1, 2014, for courses approved for CLE credit by the MN CLE Board and viewed on or after July 1, 2014.  These on demand Minnesota CLE courses must still meet the requirements of the Minnesota CLE Board’s Rules and be approved for CLE credit.

First, delivery of CLE programming through alternative technologies is not a new phenomenon. Lawyers long ago integrated digital technology into their day-to-day practice, through e-mail, electronic filing or submission, and electronic sharing and exchange of case information with clients and adversaries. Indeed, given the pace of integration and the depth to which technology has infiltrated the practice of law and court operations, the American Bar Association Commission on Ethics 20/20 recommended, and the ABA House of Delegates adopted, amendments to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct that encourage lawyers to be familiar with the “benefits and risks” of technology.[3]

Attorney Credits has become a CLE Sponsor in Minnesota and we have already begun the process of applying for on demand CLE course approval by the Minnesota CLE Board.  We hope to be able to offer on demand audio and video CLE courses for attorneys in Minnesota beginning on July 1, 2014.  Minnesota attorneys will enjoy the luxury of being able to take CLE courses at any time of the day or night, either through the Attorney Credits website or downloading their MN CLE courses and working offline.
