CO CLE: The Colorado CLE Deadline is December 31

The Colorado CLE deadline is rapidly approaching![1] Colorado attorneys must complete 45 CO CLE hours every 3 years in order to meet the Colorado CLE requirement.[2] Please note: if the forty-five required CO CLE credit hours, at least seven hours must be completed in the area of legal ethics.

December 31 CO CLE Deadline

CO CLE: How to Report Your Colorado CLE Hours

Colorado attorneys must complete 45 CLE hours – including 7 hours of ethics – during each compliance period. The 45 CO CLE hours must be completed every three years.[1] All Colorado CLE credits must be reported to the Colorado Office of Continuing Legal and Judicial Education.

Colorado CLE Course ID Number

To report your completed CO CLE hours, you will need the course ID number for the course. The course ID will be located on the Certificate of Completion that you will be issued once you complete the course.

You must use the online Colorado CLE affidavit system to enter the course ID number and report the CO CLE credits you’ve earned. If you do not have a course ID, you can search the online Colorado affidavit system by course date and sponsor. Or you can contact Attorney Credits for further assistance in locating the course ID number: CO CLE.

[1] The first CO CLE compliance period begins on the date of your admission to practice law in Colorado and ends on December 31 of the third full calendar year following the year of your admission.

CO CLE: Online CLE Courses Are Considered Homestudy

Colorado attorneys must complete 45 credit hours of CLE every 3 years to complete the CO CLE requirement. And don’t forget, at least 7 of the required 45 credit hours must be in the area of legal ethics. All Colorado CLE credit hours must be completed by December 31 and reported by January 31. Luckily, Colorado attorneys may complete all 45 hours through online and downloadable CLE courses.

Colorado attorneys may complete all required CLE credit hours through online and downloadable CLE courses.

Online CLE courses are considered to be homestudy CLE hours in Colorado. To receive CLE credit for any home study course, a Homestudy Affidavit must be submitted to the Colorado CLE Board. Every Colorado attorney was given a Homestudy Affidavit from the Colorado Supreme Court upon admission to the bar, or subsequently with an address change. Active attorneys that are licensed to practice law in Colorado have mandatory continuing legal education (CLE) requirements. Colorado attorneys must complete 45 required CO CLE credit hours, including a minimum of 7 credit hours in the area of legal ethics.

Colorado CLE Compliance & Reporting

  • Reporting Cycle: 3 years
  • Compliance Deadline: December 31
  • Reporting Deadline: January 31

In order to keep your license to practice law in Colorado in good standing you must complete all 45 required CO CLE credit hours by December 31 and you must also report your compliance with the Colorado CLE requirement by January 31. If you do not complete the 45 required credit hours by December 31, you may file a request for an extension of time to complete your CO CLE requirements. Your request must be filed on the make-up plan form provided by the Colorado CLE Board. An extension of your original Colorado CLE compliance period can be granted only if you file an acceptable make-up plan.[1]

All Colorado CLE must be finished by December 31 in order to be timely completed.

CO CLE: Late CLE Compliance After January 31

Active attorneys that are licensed to practice law in Colorado have mandatory continuing legal education (CLE) requirements. Colorado attorneys must complete 45 required CO CLE credit hours, including a minimum of 7 credit hours in the area of legal ethics. You must complete your CO CLE requirement by December 31 and report your Colorado CLE compliance by January 31.[1]

Colorado CLE Compliance & Reporting Requirements

  • Reporting Cycle: 3 years
  • Required Credits: 45 hours
  • Compliance Deadline: December 31
  • Reporting Deadline: January 31

If you fail to complete the required 45 Colorado CLE credit hours at the end of your three-year compliance period, your final CLE reporting Affidavit will be accompanied by a specific plan for curing the CLE deficiency within 17 weeks (119 days) after the date that the final affidavit is issued. The CLE deficiency plan must be accompanied by a make-up plan filing fee when you file it.[2]

Colorado CLE Deficiency Plan

  • The CLE deficiency plan will be deemed accepted by the CO CLE Board unless the CO CLE Board notifies the attorney that the plan has been rejected.[3] You must report full completion of the CLE make-up plan no later than 14 days following the 17 week period.

[1] For CLE programs that are held outside of Colorado, you must submit a photocopy of your Colorado Affidavit form to the Colorado MCLE Board to receive CO CLE credit for the course. The CO CLE Board sends a final reporting affidavit to each registered Colorado attorney and judge to report compliance with the Colorado MCLE rules. Since Attorney Credit’s online and offline CO CLE courses are considered to be held outside of Colorado you will need to submit a photocopy of your Colorado Affidavit form to the Colorado MCLE Board.

[2] The CO CLE Board will determine the amount of the fee annually.

[3] The CO CLE Board will notify you within 14 days after the CLE Board’s receipt of the final affidavit if the plan is not accepted.
